The Weirdest Kids In The World

Be afraid...  Be very afraid...

Why should you be afraid?  Because, in my thirty-plus years on this planet, I have managed to spawn!  That's right, Binky...  There's more of me out there.  And someday, they will be old enough to be making decisions that could affect you!!!

Let me introduce you to the little scamps...

Name: Amanda Marie Springer

Date of birth: March 28th, 1989

Fascinating factoid: Amanda was the subject of one of my most popular pieces, I Was A First-time Father.  She's a great kid.  She's also an official teenager now, so it's just about time for me to begin having anxiety attacks.

She was the biggest fan of my music that I had until she discovered rap music.  It's a sad day when a father's little girl decides that a filthy-mouthed chunkhead like Eminem is more interesting than her dad.  But I guess that's what happens when you're older than your children.

Name: Caleb Donald Wallace Dobbs

Date of birth: February 2nd, 1992

Fascinating factoid: Although not actually my own son (he was my stepson from my last marriage), Caleb might as well be one of mine.  He's got my sense of humor, as well as my interest in hockey.  I've known him since not too long after he was born (three months premature).  He was so small at the time that I could hold him in the palm of one hand.  He's okay now, if a bit strange, but I mark that down to his upbringing.

By the way, Caleb would like everyone to know that he has a large, fuzzy, green hat, and he's not afraid to use it.  (I intend to put a picture of it up as soon as I can.)

Name: Vaughn Rose Springer

Date of birth: February 3rd, 1996

Fascinating factoid: Vaughn was named after Stevie Ray Vaughan (although I misspelled it to the lady who was filling out the birth certificate, even going so far as to argue with her mother about the spelling--D'OH!), who is one of my all-time favorite musicians.  Although she started playing hockey a little bit, she had since decided she wants to be a figure skater.  One bit of advice: Don't tell her she looks cute in her skating outfit.  She'll scrunch up her face and exclaim, "I AM NOT!!!"

Name: Nigel Vernon Springer

Date of birth: July 6th, 1999

Fascinating factoid: Following the positive responses to naming his big sister after a guitarist, I decided to do the same thing with Nigel.  However, I took a bit of a right turn this time, choosing to name him after a guitarist who does not exist that played lead guitar for a fictional English band (portrayed by three American comedians).  That's right.  Nigel was named after none other than Nigel Tufnel from Spinal Tap.

While this has brought about many questions (such as "What the heck have you been smoking?" and "But you're not English, are you?"), the name was pretty well accepted by those who have met him.  This name choice was a prophetic one, in that Nigel now acts like an English football hooligan.  But he's still so darn cute!

Reasons why having kids is great:
  • Have an automatic, built-in excuse to go to the toy section whenever you go to the store!
  • You can watch cartoons with impunity!
  • They get all the coolest toys... And they share!
  • Think you need an excuse to keep Kool-Aid in the house?  Get yourself a kid!
  • After chasing down the ice cream truck, you can still sound intelligent buying Bomb Pops by saying, "They're for my kids!"
  • There's always someone willing to play Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots with you!
  • And so much more!
